Military Missions in Action Celebrates Historic Year in 2024: A Record Number of Veterans and Families Served
Fuquay-Varina, NC – Military Missions in Action (MMIA) proudly announces a historic year in 2024, marking unprecedented growth in support for Veterans, active-duty servicemembers, and their families. Through its dedicated efforts, MMIA directly impacted the lives of 5,808 Veterans and their loved ones—a 39% increase from 2023.
“Every number represents a story, a family, and a hero who has sacrificed for our country,” said Greg Gebhardt, Executive Director of MMIA. “This year’s record-breaking impact is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, donors, and community partners. We remain committed to serving those who served us.”
Expanding Support for Veterans and Their Families
Throughout 2024, MMIA made significant strides in addressing the needs of Veterans across North Carolina and beyond:
195 families received essential furniture and household goods, with MMIA volunteers traveling 20,071 miles to deliver support to 251 Veterans and their families.
30 building projects were completed, ensuring safe and independent living for 54 disabled Veterans and their families.
1,416 unhoused Veterans were assisted through 12 Veteran Stand Down events, providing them with critical resources and services.
3,105 care packages—totaling 20,493 pounds of food and personal care items—were shipped to servicemembers deployed overseas.
6,211 holiday gifts were distributed to 983 military families, ensuring that children of our nation’s heroes experienced the joy of the season.
Essential transportation was provided to 27 Veterans in need.
For many, the impact of MMIA’s work extends far beyond numbers—it is life-changing.
Bill, a formerly homeless Navy Veteran from Raleigh, shared, “MMIA gave me a fresh start. When I had nothing, they showed up with furniture, food, and, most importantly, kindness. They reminded me that I wasn’t forgotten.”
Military Missions In Action is the only Veteran’s nonprofit in the State of North Carolina that offers furniture bank services to all 100 counties through their “Homes For Healing” program. Homes For Healing takes gently used home furnishings, largely from donations, repurposes the items and delivers the items to veterans and their families. Many of those they serve are transitioning from homelessness to housing stability.
Gary, an Army Veteran from Asheville who is recovering from addition, echoed this sentiment: “Getting off the streets was one battle, but rebuilding my life was another. MMIA drove all the way across the state to make sure I had a washer and dryer. That might not seem like a big deal, but to someone in recovery, not having to expose myself to triggers of my addiction is truly life changing. They also gave me hope. Their support helped me believe in myself again.”
A Call to Action
As MMIA celebrates another historic year, the need for support continues. With thousands of Veterans still facing housing insecurity, food shortages, and other challenges, the organization remains steadfast in its mission.
“We can’t do this alone,” Gebhardt emphasized. “Our success is fueled by the generosity of our community. Whether it’s a $10 a month donation, volunteering, or spreading the word—every effort makes a difference in the lives of those who have served.”
